Baits or Lures; Which Is Best to Use?

Baits or lures? This is one of the most common questions every angler has asked themselves and other anglers at least once. Some anglers prefer baits because it’s the more “natural” way of landing while others prefer the artificial lures for their more appealing characteristics. But the truth is, there’s no definite right or wrong answer when it comes to this question – both baits and lures have their own particular strengths and weaknesses that would work in one situation and wouldn’t in another. In this article we will differentiate both baits and lures and weigh out their pros and cons.

Baits

Anglers would say that using live baits is highly effective because you are feeding the fish something that they are accustomed to eating. But we will give you three more benefits to consider when you fish using live baits:

  • Live bait is cheap and free. You can obtain live baits on your own. If you don’t have enough time to hunt them by yourself, you can buy some at a store or online. You can get some for less than $5.
  • Virtually all fish will take down live bait. This means that when you use live bait, your chance of landing a fish will dramatically increase.
  • Live baits give you less options. You don’t have to spend an entire day just to jump on lure after lure. With a live bait you just have to think about how many you should bring.

The only con that you can experience with using live baits is that it can be a hassle to procure and care for. For example, you need to use a certain type of container to keep their freshness and to keep the baits alive. But if you want to amp up your chances of landing your target species then you’d definitely use live baits. But the true key to using baits is knowing what to throw to attract the type of fishing you’re trying to catch.

Artificial Lures

Just like live baits, artificial lures have some advantages and disadvantages. But let’s just focus on the pros for now. For one, you don’t have use refrigeration or keep artificial lures in a certain type of container to remain alive. Below are some more positive benefits of using lures:

  • Lures are safe both for you and the fish. When a fish gets hooked on a lure, the fish will always end up with the hook through its lips, jaw or mouth. It’s gonna be easier for you to hook and unhook a fish with a lure.
  • Anglers would agree that using lures can be a bit challenging to catch a fish – which only makes it more satisfying. If you want to feel the thrill of whether you’re going to land or not, then try your luck with some lures.

The number one con of using artificial lures is that you have to shell out some cash as they’re more often than not expensive. The more advanced and well-designed it is, the more pricey it will be. And as we mentioned, there are hundreds and hundreds of different lures to choose from. To keep you from getting confused, do some research on what type of lures you should use before you head to your local store.
