Whether you’re targeting the elusive dogtooth tuna or the majestic marlin, understanding the best times to fish in Vanuatu can make all the difference. In this guide, we’ll delve into the seasonal patterns that influence fishing success and share expert tips to help you reel in the catch of a lifetime.

Why Vanuatu is a Top Fishing Destination

Vanuatu’s waters are teeming with a variety of fish species, making it a top choice for both novice and seasoned anglers. The archipelago’s diverse marine ecosystem provides an ideal habitat for species like dogtooth tuna and marlin, which are the stars of any fishing adventure here.

Seasonal Fishing Insights for Vanuatu

Understanding the seasonal patterns is crucial for planning your fishing trip. The best time to fish in Vanuatu typically depends on what you wish to target. Vanuatu offers a year round fishery we’ve broken into three distinct periods.

January – April

This period marks the prime fishing season in Vanuatu for Monster GT, Dogtooth Tuna, Big Yellowfin Tuna, and Blue Marlin. The sea conditions are typically calm, as the trade wind season is over. Expect warm daytime temperatures around 30 degrees, paired with high humidity. You’ll likely enjoy sunny days interspersed with tropical showers in the afternoons. Although there’s a slight risk of tropical cyclones, they usually come with ample warning. It’s an ideal time to pursue extreme big fish in serene waters.

May – August

Anglers during these months can target a diverse array of species, including Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo. Daytime temperatures are comfortably between 26-28 degrees, with low to moderate humidity. The South East trade winds emerge in the winter months, averaging 10-20 knots, resulting in moderate sea conditions. It’s a great time to travel if you’re looking to catch a wider variety of species.

September – December

Spring ushers in the spawning season, making it an exciting time as all species become more active and feed vigorously. A wide range of species is available, including Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, and Blue Marlin. However, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo tend to taper off by December, while Yellowfin Tuna grow larger. Day temperatures range comfortably between 26-30 degrees, with low to moderate humidity. The South East trade winds subside from October to December, bringing light to moderate sea conditions.
